The most common canine spinal disorder is intervertebral disc disease. Intervertebral discs are shock absorbers positioned between the vertebrae. Over time, many canine discs degenerate, protrude into the spinal canal and apply pressure to the spinal cord or nerve roots. Clinical signs are variable and range from pain to paralysis. Clinical signs depend on the severity of the protrusion or herniation and location. Location can be broken down into cervical (neck), thoracolumbar (mid-back), or lumbosacral (lower-back) disc disease.
