Cervical Disc Disease

Intervertebral disc disease and herniation in the cervical (neck) region is common. Pain (may be severe at times) and unwillingness to move the head and neck are the most common signs. Signs may appear quickly or gradually.

Cervical disc herniation can be diagnosed using X-ray, myelography (spinal dye study) or MRI. The treatment involves removing the disc material from the spinal canal. Overall the prognosis following cervical disc surgery is excellent. Recurrence at the same or another location is possible but unlikely (5-10% chance).
